Some Fundamentals about Psychotherapy

(to help you get the most out of the process)

Psychotherapy is most successful when you want to be there, crave change, possess a curiosity of your inner world, an interest in what motivates you, and at least some tolerance of frustration.

Psychotherapy helps you to help yourself - it will not fix you, only you can fix you.  Psychotherapy can help you to discover the patterns that keep you stuck, facilitate self-awareness, empower you with ways to deal with life issues, identify the triggers to your difficulties, and build resiliency, so you can find wellbeing.

Psychotherapy is most effective when based on realistic goals and expectations - change, or the development of insight, don't generally happen overnight.  It takes time and effort to become more comfortable with your emotional experience, and replace old thought patterns and behaviours with new ones.

Psychotherapy can be reflective of life - sometimes it will feel meaningful and exciting, like you are finally getting somewhere; while at other times it can feel difficult, requiring you to be courageous.  I welcome the client's concerns and challenges with the process because they often present therapeutic opportunities that contribute further to healing and growth - if a client can successfully process uncomfortable feelings they hold towards me or the process, it increases the chances of being able to process difficult feelings towards significant others in their life, as well as helping to effect changes within their environment.
