What is Psychotherapy?

Essentially, psychotherapy is a conversation, collaboration and relationship between two people: the client who is suffering and the therapist who is in service to the client.

The Process of Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy usually begins with an evaluation (1 or 2 sessions) followed by regular (e.g. weekly) sessions of psychotherapy.  The process may be brief and focused, or deeper and longer-term depending on a variety of considerations, such as the nature of the difficulties, level of distress, motivation, timing and financial feasibility.

The First Appointment

During our first appointment, I will invite you to share the difficulties and/or reasons for which you seek help.  I may also ask you about your strengths and resources, as well as your expectations and goals for therapy.  In order to help me understand your difficulties a little better, I may also ask you some questions about your background.  My approach is warm and empathic, which I hope will enable you to feel comfortable and safe enough to speak freely about your difficulties.  If for any reason we are not a "good fit" or we determine that I am not the best person to help you with your difficulties, part of the process is to support you in finding a more appropriate match.
